Traveling to Nyungwe Forest National Park
How to get to Nyungwe…… Nyungwe forest national park is located in the south western Rwanda, close to the Lake Kivu and Democratic Republic of Congo, with the Burundi border in the south. To the west, is Cyangugu town a 4-5 hour drive from Kigali. Walking to the park is possible , but it will take you longer, and thus the park can be accessed by road and fastest by air.
Drive from Kigali
By car or private: It is much more convenient and comfortable to hire a car in good condition and this could take a shorter time to reach the Park.
By Bus or public means: You will board a bus from Nyabugogo Bus Park to Rusizi and stop at Uwinka reception Center. It could take about 8 hours traveling by bus. The buses that drive through Nyungwe Park are often a bit full but you can hope on those
The cost of hiring a car could range between USD 100 – USD 300 per day. This depends on the type of car you opt depending on your group size.
To start your Nyungwe primate safari, you can start the journey from Kigali by car and travel south. On the way you will come a across several towns,. These include Huye town about 32km from Kigali one of the main cities. The road has some very sharp turns and is quite smooth therefore your driver should be careful when heading to Nyungwe Park.
Nyungwe Road Route Options
If you want a self-drive, here are a few road directions from Kigali.
-From Kigali drive south west to Muhanga, then south to Nyanza and on to Huye town.
-From Huye town drive on Westwards towards Nyamagabe, which is quite close to the Nyungwe park entrance.
Time permitting you will make a few stops to see some of the beautiful and memorable historical sites. Some of the sites include Nyanza King’s palace at Nyabisindi. Nyanza palace that has been reconstructed to provide information about Rwanda’s cultural history and its past royal kingdoms. Another sight along the way is at the National museum with a Botanical garden, locally made handicraft shops, traditional demonstration of the “intore” dancers and Gikongoro’s Genocide Memorial as you drive to Nyungwe Forest.
Travel by air
You can book a flight with RwandAir for faster means of transport. RwandAir offers domestic flights from Kigali – Kamembe International airport which about 32km from Nyungwe Park and as well offers helicopter pickups. RwandAir takes a minimum of 9 flights to Kamembe Airport per week.
Or you can opt to fly by Helicopter with akagera aviation directly to the one and only Nyungwe house. As a result this flight will offer you scenic views of Nyungwe forest and tea plantations.
